Azazel was the Demon King of Spirits and the Prince of Gehenna as a son of Satan, Azazel was third in the Demonic Hierarchy and the most powerful Son of Satan who was said to make Samael (Mephisto) scared of him, his power was such that he and his followers could reincarnate into human bodies from their birth and thus could not be exorcised easily except with the body's death.
In the Demonic Invasion Arc, he leads the Demons to War while his father was hibernating after the final battle of the original Blue Exorcist run, revealing that he is the Regent Prince of Gehenna and rules in the absence of Satan.

The meaning of the name Azazel is "who God strengthens".
Azazel is also one of the Demonic creatures that is said to be a Fallen Angel, either being mistaken for the Devil or being the Angel that caused other Angels to rebel, Azazel is also the name of an Angel of Death and is identified with Samael. Azazel was listed as one of the Princes of Hell, although this tends to vary, similar to the names of the Archangels.
